Since December 2015, the Internet Society, in partnership with COMSATS Internet Services, has been implementing a pilot initiative in Chak-5 Faiz, a rural village in Pakistan, as part of the Wireless for Communities (W4C) Programme. This programme focuses on last mile connectivity in rural and remote areas, which involves developing communities’ capacity to build and operate the wireless network, and empowering them to create and use digital services.
The Internet plays a central role in developing and augmenting the capacities of the youth. However, use of the Internet also entails new risks regarding their safety and protection both in the physical and virtual worlds. Therefore, it is important to understand how to implement appropriate measures and enhance their effectiveness rather than quick-fix interventions to limit children’s online access which can cause a loss of benefits the Internet can deliver. However, there has been only limited research on child online safety measures in Asia and the Pacific.
On the sidelines of the 62nd Commission on the Status of Women in New York on 16 March, ESCAP launched the EGovforWomen Online Toolkit – the first region-wide toolbox to support gender mainstreaming of E-Government. Through a set of five comprehensive modules, this innovative public resource provides key pointers for policymakers on gender-responsive design of e-service delivery, e-participation and connectivity initiatives, as well as introduces a capabilities-based approach to evaluate E-Government for women’s empowerment.
#DQEveryChild is an initiative by the DQ Institute in association with the World Economic Forum to assess, educate and protect children in the digital environment. The campaign stands for Digital Intelligence Quotient and it aims to maximize opportunities and minimize risks for 100 countries by 2020. The DQ Institute believes that every child deserves an equal opportunity to succeed in the digital world while being protected.
