Why Women in Tech Matter
What does a 14-year-old teenager from Ireland, an engineer from Nigeria, an executive from France, a tech entrepreneur from Texas, and a Hollywood actor have in common? They all support the EQUALS vision for gender equality in tech! EQUALS is the global partnership to ensure that women and girls are equal participants in the digital technology revolution.
At South by Southwest (SXSW) in Texas, USA from 10-19 March 2017, a diverse group of men and women from around the globe came together to discuss an important topic: Why Women in Tech Matter. Some of the questions discussed were:
- What are the current barriers facing women in the technology industry?
- What initiatives are being led by companies and international organizations to address gender balance in ICT industry?
- Why are roles models important to inspire more girls to enter the world of technology?
The issue of gender balance in the field of technology is a hot topic and global initiatives are trying to get more women and girls interested in tech. However, data shows that the digital gender gap is in fact is getting worse. ITU, the UN ICT agency, is leading innovative solutions to close the gender gap.
Academy Award-winning actor Geena Davis, ITU Special Envoy Women and Girls in ICT, delivered the following message about EQUALS and ensuring that women and girls are given the same opportunities from the wide range of benefits information and communications technology offers.
